This a masterful blend of real history and what-if present day. I found myself several times putting down the book so I could do an online search just to confirm what the author, Gary McAvoy, wrote could even be true. And boy did I get a history lesson about both the Inquisition and World War II.McAvoy is obviously a student of history and has skillfully woven a tale that began a thousand years ago and continues in this millennium. His attention to detail and superb writing (an excellent command of the language) vividly paints a picture that puts your own imagination into overdrive.I felt I was in every location, walking through the Vatican gazing up at ornate ceilings, strolling through towering shelves of ancient books each with a secret story to tell, running through a seedy warehouse, and relaxing in a restaurant overlooking the hills of Rome. This is simply writing at its best, pulling the reader into each scene.McAvoy’s character development is excellent. The good guys are believable, not too perfect. And the bad guys are deliciously and believably evil.If this book wasn’t published as a piece of fiction, I could believe it was a true story. A very enjoyable read … and I am hoping and looking forward to a sequel. There were many helpful ties to the backstory from the first book, reminding the reader of some of the relationships and significant points as the story builds. Thoughtfully described details set the mood and made scenes come alive. I remain in awe of how the author researched historically accurate details to craft such richly suspenseful stories with satisfying conclusions.A thoroughly enjoyable read, highly recommended!
